Dr. Muhammad Munawar Iqbal Gondal

Engineering Geologist | Material Specialist | Pavement Engineering Expert

With over 29 years of experience, I, Dr. Muhammad Munawar Iqbal Gondal, have dedicated my career to the field of engineering geology, material testing, and pavement engineering. My expertise lies in geotechnical investigations, quality control, road construction, asphalt concrete mix design, and pavement distress analysis. I have worked extensively on highway infrastructure projects, failure investigations, and material durability testing, ensuring that construction materials meet the highest standards of quality and longevity. My leadership in research, training, and implementation of innovative quality control protocols has significantly contributed to infrastructure development in both Pakistan and the United States.

Educational Background

My academic journey began at the University of the Punjab, Pakistan, where I earned my B.Sc. in Applied Geology in 1984, followed by a Master’s degree in Applied Geology in 1986. My education provided me with a strong foundation in geotechnical sciences, soil mechanics, and material testing, which later became instrumental in my professional career. The World Education Services (WES) USA has recognized my B.Sc. degree as equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in the United States, validating my expertise on an international level.

Professional Experience

Throughout my career, I have held key positions in government and private organizations, overseeing large-scale projects, leading research, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

As Manager of Quality Control at EBA Engineering Inc., USA (2015-2016), I managed material testing, field inspections, and technical reporting for major infrastructure projects. My role involved conducting asphalt, concrete, and soil testing, supervising lab and field testing teams, and ensuring adherence to AASHTO and ASTM standards. My contributions enhanced the quality assurance processes in highway construction and pavement maintenance.

Prior to that, I served as Director of the Road Research & Material Testing Institute, Pakistan (2010-2015), where I led a team of experts in material testing, pavement distress analysis, and road failure investigations. I was responsible for overseeing research projects, developing new material testing methods, and implementing innovative techniques in pavement engineering. My leadership at the institute helped shape highway durability standards and contributed to the improvement of construction material quality across Pakistan.

Before my tenure as a director, I worked as a Senior Research Officer at the same institute (1994-2010). My key responsibilities included geotechnical investigations, soil mechanics studies, and pavement structure design. I was involved in various national highway projects, conducting failure analysis, material suitability assessments, and quality control inspections. I also trained engineers in advanced material testing techniques, ensuring that best practices were followed across different infrastructure projects.

My early career began as a Junior Research Officer at the Regional Highway Laboratory, Gujranwala (1986-1994), where I gained hands-on experience in material testing, asphalt and concrete mix design, and subsurface soil analysis. This role laid the foundation for my specialization in engineering geology and material durability testing.

Certifications & Specialized Training

To enhance my expertise, I have obtained several professional certifications in material testing, geotechnical engineering, and construction safety. I have been certified in Erosion & Sediment Control by the State of Maryland, USA (2016), and hold NICET certifications in Asphalt, Concrete, and Soil Testing (2015). Additionally, I have received training in Pavement Preservation from AASHTO (2013), Portable Nuclear Gauge & Hazmat Safety from APNGA (2012), OSHA Construction Safety (2011), and Geotechnical Subsurface Exploration from NHI, USA (2010). These certifications have allowed me to remain updated with the latest industry advancements and best practices.

Key Skills & Expertise

My core competencies include material testing, quality control, pavement design, geotechnical investigations, and failure analysis. Over the years, I have conducted extensive research on aggregate suitability, soil behavior, and road performance, making significant contributions to the field of pavement engineering. My ability to analyze pavement distress, recommend cost-effective rehabilitation solutions, and implement quality assurance protocols has played a crucial role in improving road durability and infrastructure longevity.

I have also been instrumental in training and mentoring engineers on advanced material testing techniques. My technical expertise, combined with my commitment to continuous learning and innovation, has enabled me to stay at the forefront of engineering geology and material science research.

Research & Publications

I have published several research papers on pavement distress, material suitability, and road failure analysis. My work on “Suitability of Aggregates in Road Construction” explores the impact of local aggregates on pavement durability. Similarly, my research on “Pavement Failure Analysis & Remedial Measures” provides insights into common road failures and their solutions. These publications have contributed to the academic and professional discourse in geotechnical engineering and infrastructure development.

Professional Memberships & Leadership

I have been an active member of several professional organizations, including serving as the Ex-President of the Punjab Geological Society. My affiliation with AASHTO’s Pavement Design Committee and the International Society for Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering has allowed me to stay updated with global advancements in pavement engineering and material sciences. These memberships reflect my commitment to knowledge sharing, professional development, and continuous improvement in the field of geotechnical engineering.
